旧約聖書(Old Testament)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
初めに神は天と地を造られた。(Gen. 1:1)

Darkness was upon the face of the deep.
闇(やみ)が深淵の面(おもて)にあった。(Gen. 1:2)

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
神は「光あれ」と言われた。すると光があった。(Gen. 1:3)

God divided the light from the darkness.
神は光と闇を分けられた。(Gen. 1:4)

God said, Let there be light. And there was light.
神は「光あれ」と言った。こうして光があった。(Gen. 1:6)

God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters.
神は言われた、水の中に大空あれ。(Gen. 1:6)

God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas.

God created man in his own image.
神は自分の形に似せて人を造った。(Gen. 1:27)

The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.
主なる神は土の塵で人を形づくり、その鼻に命の息を吹き入れられた。(Gen. 2:7)

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
また主なる神は言われた、「人がひとりでいるのは良くない。彼のために、ふさわしい助け手を造ろう」。(Gen. 2:18)

A man... shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.
男は…女と結ばれ2人は一体となる。(Gen. 2:24)

They knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
(アダムとイブの)2人は自分たちが裸であることを知り2人はいちじくの葉をつづり合わせ腰を覆うものとした。(Gen. 3:7)

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
人はその妻エバを知った。彼女はみごもり、カインを産んで言った、「わたしは主によって、ひとりの人を得た」。(Gen. 4:1)

All flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
すべて肉なる者はこの地で堕落の道を歩んでいた。(Gen. 6:12)

The whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
世界中は同じ言葉を使って同じように話していた。(Gen. 11:1)

The famine shall consume the land.
飢餓が国を滅ぼしてしまうのだ。(Gen. 41:30)

Don't take God's name in vain.
みだりに神の名を唱え[用い」てはいけない。(Exod. 20:7)

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.
なんじ殺すなかれ。(Exod. 20:13)

Thou shalt not commit adultery.
汝(なんじ)姦淫することなかれ。(Exod. 20:14)

Thou shalt not steal.
あなたは盗んではならない。(Exod. 20:15)

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
目には目、歯には歯、手には手、足には足、(Exod. 24:24)

Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
焼き傷には焼き傷、傷には傷、打ち傷には打ち傷をもって償わなければならない。(Exod. 24:25)

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

One witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.
1人の証人の証言のみで人を死に至らせてはならない。(Numb. 35:30)

Man shall not live by bread alone.
(Deut. 8:3; Matt. 4:4; Luke 4:4)

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

God is our help and shield.
神はわが助け、わが盾なり《Deut. 33:29》より

Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
反逆は占いの罪に、高慢は偶像崇拝に等しい。(1 Sam. 15:23)

Now let your hands be strengthened and be ye valiant.
力を奮い起し勇敢な者となってください。(2 Sam. 2:7)

The Lord is the horn of salvation.
主はわが救いの角。(2 Sam. 22:3; Ps. 18:3)

Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
この地上における私たちの人生は影のようなもので希望はありません。(1 Chr. 29:15)

Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine [my] integrity.
正義を秤(はかり)として(私を)量ってもらいたい、神に私の潔白を知ってもらいたい。(Job 31:6)

Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

The needy shall not always be forgotten.
貧しい人は永遠に忘れられることはない。(Ps. 9:18)

I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind.
人の心は私を死者のように葬り去る。(Ps. 31:12)

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord?
主の力強い御業(みわざ)を言葉に表せる者があろうか。(Ps. 106:2)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
《ことわざ》神を畏(おそ)れるのは知恵の初め。(Ps. 111:10; Prov. 1:7)

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
[自分​の]道​に​おい​て​とが​の​ない​者​たち、エホバ​の​律法​に​よっ​て​歩む​者​たち​は​幸い​です。(Ps. 119:1)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
主を恐れることは知識のはじめである、愚かな者は知恵と教訓を軽んじる。(Prov. 1:7)

Go to the ant, thou shuggard; consider her ways, and be wise.
怠け者よ、アリのところへ行って見よ。その道を見て知恵を得よ。(Prov. 6:6)

Commandment is a lamp; and the law is light.
戒めは灯(ともしび)、教えは光。(Prov. 6:23)

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
不義の宝は益なく、正義は人を救い出して、死を免れさせる。(Prov. 10:2)

Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

As the whirlwind passes, so is the wicked no more; but the righteous is an everlastiing foundation.
神に逆らう者はつむじ風の過ぎるように消える。神に従う人はことしえの礎(いしずえ)。(Prov. 10:25)

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
高慢には軽蔑が伴い、謙遜には知恵が伴う。(Prov. 11:2)

As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
気前のよい人は自分も太り、他を潤す人は自分も潤う。(Prov. 11:25)

Man shall be commended according to his wisdom.
人は見識ゆえに称賛される。(Prov. 12:8)

A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

The lip of truth shall be established for ever.
真実を語る唇はいつでも確かなもの。(Prov. 12:19)

There shall no evil happen to the just.
神に従う人はどのような災難にもあわない。(Prov. 12:21)

Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.

The soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
勤勉な人は(望めば)豊かに満たされる。(Prov. 13:4)

The law of the wise is a fountain of life.
賢人の教えは命の源。(Prov. 13:14)

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful.
笑っていても心の痛むことがある。(Prov. 14:13)

He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

A soft answer turns away wrath.
(非難に対する)柔らかな応答は憤りを鎮める。(Prov. 15:1)

The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
どこにも主の目は注がれ善人をも悪人をも見ておられる。(Prov. 15:3)

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life.
癒(いや)しをもたらす舌は命の木。(Prov. 15:4)

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom.
意志の弱い者には無知が喜びとなる。(Prov. 15:21)

Pride goes before destruction.
《ことわざ》高慢の後に没落が来る;「おごる者久しからず」《◆Pride goeth...が本来のことわざ》(Prov. 16:18)

Pleasant words were as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
親切な言葉は密の滴り、魂に甘く骨をいやす。(Prov. 16:24)

A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends.
暴言をはく者はいさかいを起させる。陰口は友情を裂く。(Prov. 16:28)

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

A foolish son is the calamity of his father.
愚かな息子は父の破滅。(Prov. 19:13)

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
時宜(じぎ)にかなって語られる言葉は、銀の彫り物にはめた金のりんごのようだ。(Prov. 25:11)

Where no wood is, there the fire goes out.
木がなければ火は消える(原因となるものがなければ争いも起こることはない)。(Prov. 26:20)

To the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
飢えている人には苦いものも甘い。(Prov. 27:7)

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart.
香油も香りも心を楽しませる。(Prov. 27:9)

Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.
近い隣人は遠い兄弟にまさる。(Prov. 27:10)

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

A man's pride shall bring him low.
驕(おご)る者は低くされる[卑しまれる]。(Prov. 29:23)

Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.

Nation shall not lift up sword against nation.
国は国に向かって剣(つるぎ)を上げてはならない。(Isa. 2:4)

The lofty looks of man shall be humbled; and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down.
人間の高ぶる目は低くされ、傲慢な者は卑しめられる。(Isa. 2:11)

The seed of evildoer shall never be renowned.
悪を行なう者たちの末は永遠にその名を呼ばれることはない。。。(Isa. 14:20)

The liberal devises liberal things.
高貴な人は高貴なことをはかる。(Isa. 32:8)

The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
しかし主を待ち望む者は新たなる力を得、わしのように翼をはって、のぼることができる。走っても疲れることなく、歩いても弱ることはない。 (40:31)

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.

I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.
わたしは初めであり、終わりである、わたしをおいて神はない。(Isa. 44:6)

They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; their delectable things shall not profit.
偶像を形づくる者はみな無力である。彼らが慕うものも役に立たない。(Isa. 44:9)
